AUTOMOTIVE EXPORTS are driving up airfreight volumes out of Port Elizabeth.
In June Birkart Globistics did a record R1,3-million in
business with SAA Cargo.
It broke the R1-million mark again in July. Birkart paid its first million to SAA Cargo in April last year, when it did
R1,2-million worth of business through the airline.
SAA Cargo area sales manager Sheldon Matthews says he expects air cargo out of the city to grow with the recent opening of a number of new high-value plants producing catalytic converters and leather seat covers.
Matthews says the bulk of the exports are bound for Europe, but there is growing traffic to China and South America. Birkart Globistics' branch manager Nirend Badal says the company, which opened in the city in 1997, has plans for expansion.
It recently opened an office in East London to serve the growing automotive exports out of that city.
