The roll-on roll-off carrier, Felicity Ace, which caught fire while crossing the North Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday, was carrying almost 4000 cars, including luxury models such as Audi, Porsche and Lamborghini.
Portugal’s navy and air force responded rapidly to the scene of the maritime disaster and rescued the 22 crew members who were onboard the roro carrier.
The 200m-long Panamanian-flagged vessel was sailing to the Port of Davisville in Rhode Island when it ran into trouble south of the Azores island of Faial.
The crew escaped in a lifeboat and were picked up by the Suezmax crude oil tanker, Resilient Warrior.
According to Bloomberg, there were 3 965 Volkswagen AG vehicles on board, including 1 100 Porches.
The news service said it had viewed an internal Volkswagen email that indicated that Porsche, Audi, and Lamborghini models were on board the vessel.
The vessel was also reportedly carrying around 200 Bentleys.
Luke Vandezande, a spokesperson for Porsche, told News24 that the company estimated that around 1 100 of its vehicles were among those on board the Felicity Ace at the time of the fire.
He said automobile dealers were contacting their customers who had been affected by the incident.
However, some vehicle dealership customers turned to social media to express their disappointment.
Twitter user Matt “I Park Cars” Farah claimed that his custom-specified Porsche Boxter Spyder was among the stranded cargo.
The standard model prices of the vehicle start at around $99 650.
Investigations to determine the cause of the fire are under way.
The Portuguese navy said on Wednesday night that the ship’s owner was arranging for the vessel to be towed.
