BA enters Angola market

BRITISH AIRWAYS World Cargo (BAWC) will launch a weekly service from London to Luanda, Angola on November 1. Initially, however, limited cargo space will be reserved for perishables from the UK and Europe. According to BAWC general manager, planning and control Ian Herbert, no upliftments from Luanda are possible at this stage because of the lack of suitable processing facilities. The airline also wants to be sure that safety will be of the top order before agreeing to carry cargo. This means that when British Airways starts up its new service, it will be confined almost entirely to passengers with little cargo being carried on its Boeing 777 aircraft. Getting the infrastructure in place and taking its share of the emerging market requirements will fall under the care of BAWC's vice president for Europe and Africa, Tony Nothman. Feasibility studies will be undertaken and cargo services are likely to start at some stage in the new year.
