AUSTRIAN AIRLINES is to discontinue its service between Johannesburg and Vienna from April 25, 2001, stating that the route has become unprofitable in the light of increasing operating costs.
The airline's general manager for Africa, Thomas Zilk, will leave his present post in September to take up a senior position in the airline's Zurich office.
He will be replaced by Michaela Messner-Myburgh, who will be at the helm during the wrapping up period.
The airline has carried cargo loads in the belly of its passenger liners, and it is the decreasing profitability in the latter sector that has encouraged the decision to stop flying to this country.
Cargo operations have been satisfactory since the airline opened the Austria-South Africa route in 1991, and a cargo office is expected to be maintained here with booking arrangements being handled through other carriers to serve Austrian destinations.
