ONE WAY to overcome cargo theft at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg is for shippers to ally with their air carriers and become proactive about security. One airline who took that route recorded a dramatic improvement in pilferage. “We experienced a very bad time, and in October we decided to take the matter into our own hands. We did not simply wish to leave the problem to our customers,” an airline spokesperson told FTW. That month the airline’s customers experienced ten incidents of pilfering a day. Every Monday, without fail, the airline met with its top five customers. “One of the steps we took was to have more secure packaging and we are more alert,” the spokesman said. From ten a day, the number of pilfering incidents has been reduced to two a week – a drop of about 1800%.
