Chang Yung-fa, the founder of Taiwanese liner Evergreen – and who developed it from a single ship in 1968 into Asia’s biggest container shipping line with a 192 vessel fleet - has died at the age of 88.
This year’s latest analysis by Alphaliner reveals that Evergreen has taken over from Hapag-Lloyd as the fourth largest container shipping line in the world.
Chang was no fan of carrier conferences fixing rates, and delayed the line’s move into liner alliances and megaships.
For a spell in the 1980s, according to Port Technology, Evergreen Line was the world’s biggest container line, although the chairman’s reluctance to invest in big ships later held back its growth, said the Financial Times.
