Airfreight shortage feared

WITH SA due to host the World Summit Conference on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg this year - from August 25 to September 9 - this might cut airfreight space to a minimum. The press reports suggest that some 65 000 delegates are due to attend although it is still not clear whether this will include the numbers of press, observers and lobbyists that are also likely to attend the conference. But what one major forwarder is sure of is that there will be a shortage of airfreight space at this time and likely delays in moving, clearing and delivering cargo, particularly in the Gauteng area. The suggestion is that airfreight users should diarise these dates and plan their airfreight dates in the second half of the year to take this probable snarl-up into account.
