Das adds frequency, destinations
DAS AIR Cargo will introduce a second frequency on its Johannesburg - Entebbe service next month, with flights leaving Johannesburg on Thursdays at 16:30 and arriving at the Entebbe hub at 22:30.
This is in addition to the existing Sunday service. At the same time on-going services from Entebbe have been opened to various new African destinations. Cities now served are Kigali, Dar es Salaam, Lusaka, Accra, Bujumbura, Lagos, Nairobi, Niamey, Ouagadougou, Bamako and Lome.
The airline is currently flying Boeing 707 freighters on these routes, but is planning to replace these with DC10s during the next 18 months.
The increase in cargo loads to most destinations is rising at such a rate that I am confident we can fill two DC10s in two years, says Max Mariotti, sales manager for Aviation GSA the UK-based airline's local gsa.
While the 707 freighter can convey 13 pallets, 12 of these are packed sideways in the aircraft but the thirteenth is positioned nose-to-tail in the rear. In many instances heavy machinery is now being flown from this country to African destinations, especially those requiring mining equipment, and the thirteenth pallet has to be removed to make space for this type of cargo.
The larger DC10 has the space to eliminate this need, giving it greater capacity.
The African market is growing by leaps and bounds, and we are uplifting more and more heavy equipment to meet these demands, says Mariotti.
