THERE IS NO need for concern if you are flying in an Airbus when the clock ticks on to record the start of the year 2000. Nothing will go wrong, is the assuring news from Airbus Industrie.
In their latest newsletter, the French-based aircraft manufacturers state that their on-board computer systems will not be affected by the change of date at the beginning of the next millennium.
One of the main reasons is that the computers needed to fly the aircraft are hardly linked to a date and for the others, such as maintenance related computers, the said date change is not an issue.
There is widespeard concern, says the newsletter, that computer systems will not be able to cope with the change of date at the start of year 2000.
Detailed investigations and tests have been carried out to ensure that Airbus Industrie aircraft systems that use the date will not fail as a result of date change.
The company, while ensuring that all in-house office operations will cope with the date change, states that it is working pro-actively with all relevant third parties, including office computer software, to secure Year 2000 compliance.
Year 2000 compliance is recognised as a primary business obligation. The Airbus Industrie policy is for every system or electronic device linked to its products to be compliant by January 1999.
