More than 100 delegates representing worldwide network Global Logistics Associates (GLA) convened in Johannesburg last month for their annual general meeting hosted by local representative Kingfisher Freight. The AGM, which saw nine new members introduced to the organisation, was a useful platform to showcase Africa as a viable business arena, Kingfisher Freight’s Alwyn Nel told FTW. This is the second time the company has hosted the AGM, with the first held in Cape Town in 2000. GLA is a global notfor- profit association of independent freight forwarders and Customs brokers. “Not only did the AGM go very well, but the African members worked together with Kingfisher Freight to sell the continent to our fellow members by identifying the major business opportunities available,” said Nel. “We also ensured that there was sufficient time for one-on-one meetings to ensure members were able to sign deals and discuss opportunities to enhance trade with one another.” One of the oldest freight associations, the GLA aims to offer is members the ability to better compete against larger companies on a worldwide basis and to improve profits. “Africa is seeing unprecedented growth, with major interest from all over the world. The continent has much to offer especially with the major driver and focus on infrastructure development,” said Nel.
