Aarto on its way

The Administrative
Adjudication of Road Traffic
Offences (Aarto) is coming.
After protracted delays,
government officials told
delegates at the Road
Freight Association (RFA)
conference last week that it
would happen but could not
confirm a date.
“Parliament has done the
rounds of engagement with
the various stakeholders,
including with the South
African National Taxi
Council (Santaco),” Chris
Hlabisa, deputy director
general: road transport at
the department of transport,
said. “They have been called
to Parliament where robust
engagements took place.”
Hlabisa reiterated the
message that Aarto would
“soon” be the living bible in
the country.
“It will be entirely up to the
person behind the wheel of
a vehicle how they preserve
their points. Your drivers will
be in control of their licences.
How you drive and act on
the roads will now come
with responsibility,” said
Hlabisa. “The state attorney
has thoroughly reviewed
Aarto and it is now going out
for final consultation. After
that it will just be a matter of
being gazetted."
