THE MOVEMENT of a 153-ton piece of equipment from Shanghai in China to its final home in Lusaka was all in a day’s work for Bridge Shipping. The main challenge for the company, which undertook the landside leg across SA and Zambia, was in finding an appropriate 24-metre-long, multi-axle, 48-wheel trailer to carry the load measuring 18-m long, 5.3-m wide and 5.3-m high. Although the abnormal load needed Road Traffic Inspectorate police escorts, route clearance and lifting of Telkom and Eskom cables along the way, the handling went smoothly, according to a company spokesman – with a fourweek journey necessary to deliver the cargo safely to its final destination.
