Zim hopes to revive its rail industry

The Zimbabwean government hopes to see a change in fortune for the National Railways of Zimbabwe.

As part of its renewed turnaround strategy for the National Railways of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwean government is seeking partnerships with the private sector and calling in its debts.

State-owned newspaper, The Herald, reports that debtors owe more than $30 million to the parastatal.

Transport and infrastructural development minister, Dr Joram Gumbo, was quoted by the daily newspaper as saying that NRZ was owed a lot of money by both foreign and local debtors.

The railway operator was dogged by serious problems that included low capacity, a dwindling customer base and obsolete equipment, he said.
