Zambezi waterway could reopen

Freight could once again be transported along the Zambezi River following an agreement between Mozambique and Malawi to carry out feasibility and environmental impact studies to determine if the Zambezi River is in fact navigable. Boats and barges used to transport cargo along the Shire and Zambezi rivers to and from Malawi, all the way to the port of Beira on the Indian Ocean up to the late 1970s. These services were stopped due to security problems, and shallow water depths in the rivers. The agreement to investigate the reopening of the waterway was signed in Maputo recently.
