A workshop has been scheduled to address industry concerns over the consignor/consignee amendment to the National Road Traffic Act that came into force on February 1. “Many industry/state representatives are confused about how to implement this practically,” said Kevin Martin, chairman of the Durban harbour carriers’ division of the SA Association of Freight Forwarders (Saaff) KZN. The workshop will be held at Tafta Lodge in Durban on March 5 A top table of legal and insurance practitioners as well as approximately eight industry/state representatives will each state the main concerns for their industry or portfolio. The floor will then be open for questions. The intent, according to Martin, is “to arrive at a community-proposed solution to the way forward – bearing in mind the objective of compliance to eradicate overloading”. The proposed top table is: Lionel Dwyer (Saaff KZN chair), Peter Besnard (Saasoa), Chris Talbot (stevedores), Kevin Martin (harbour carriers), Paul Sessions or nominee (municipality), Chris Stretch or nominee (DoTKZN), Moshe Motlohi or nominee (Transnet), Ango Saminathan or nominee (insurance), Peter Lamb (Norton Rose Fulbright SA), and Mitchell Brooke (citrus growers).
