ROAD HAULIERS serving the busy Durban container terminal will soon utter sighs of relief at the news that work has begun on widening Bayhead road, which provides the sole access to the southern reaches of Durban harbour, including the combi and container terminals and Island View.
Work began this week when Protekon, who have been awarded the 13 month contract, moved on site. The construction calls for an additional two lane carriageway on the south side of the existing road and requires the widening of a bridge, upgrading of another and building of two new bridges. All major intersections are to be fitted with new traffic lights and street lighting will also be upgraded.
Portnet has advised that construction is likely to continue until February 2001, and has apologised for anticipated inconvenience from disruptions and deviations along the route during this period.
