Women drivers could help

SOUTH AFRICAN trucking companies facing a shortage of drivers could follow the UK and US where the focus is on putting more women behind the wheel. Freight companies in both the UK and US are being urged to employ more women. Female drivers represent only 2% of the workforce in the UK, and 5% in the US. South Africa’s statistics are not readily available, but the number is probably very low – despite Industrial Council agreements which ensure there will be no discrimination regarding salary.
