WC calls on industry to draft air strategy

The development of an air cargo strategy has been identified as top priority for the Western Cape – and it will be drafted in conjunction with industry. “We are asking industry to engage with us and work on this together,” Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro, the official tourism, trade and investment agency of the Western Cape told FTW. He said airfreight volumes had continued to increase on the back of massive growth in air connections in and out of Cape Town. In 2017 airfreight out of Cape Town International Airport grew by 52%. Harris said investments into the airfreight space were required, but industry input into this was essential for the strategy. “We need to know what the industry’s priorities are, where they want to export to and what they want to move, what facilities
they need – everything,” said Harris. “We need this expertise as we plan and strategise the future of air cargo exports in the Western Cape.” Denan Kuni, who heads up the Wesgro export team, said a collaborative approach between Wesgro and the airfreight industry would allow for the right investments to be made. “Airfreight is the new frontier and we need to engage with industry to see how we grow more aviationdriven exports in the province.”
