Walvis Bay was judged to be Africa’s most efficient port based on productivity, connectivity and ease of transport between August 1, 2012 and July 31, 2013, and the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) was given the Port Excellence award presented at the African Ports Evolution 2013 Forum held in Cape Town during the last week of August. Other nominees in the category were Transnet National Ports Authority for the Port of Durban, MPDC for the Port of Maputo and Kenya Ports Authority for the Port of Mombasa. All professionals active in the African maritime industry were eligible to submit nominations for the African Ports Evolution Excellence Awards. The entries were judged by the African Ports Evolution Advisory Board. The award comes at a time when Namport says it is preparing to accommodate what it sees as “the exponential growth of imports and exports” through African ports.
