I nvestment by Namibian company Transworld in warehouse facilities for ammonium nitrate is paying off for the mining companies, according to Richard Powell, who heads up Cargo Management and Logistics (CML) in Ndola. Transworld has built three warehouses since the port was given authorisation to move bulk ammonium nitrate, which is used for blasting. Transworld’s Norbert Liebich says the company will build more when there is sufficient demand. Previously ammonium nitrate had to be shipped through Dar es Salaam. Having ammonium nitrate in storage in Walvis Bay gives mines in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo more flexibility, he says. The chemical compound is bagged in Walvis Bay and then distributed by road to the mines in the Copperbelt by Transworld trucks. The company also has warehouse facilities in Walvis Bay (13 000 square metres), Windhoek (15 000sqm) and Oshikango (400sqm). There is 600sqm under roof with 14 PMC positions.
