Vietnam plans to build a new R198.5 billion superhub airport, aimed at competing with the other Asian hubs of Bangkok and Singapore, on a site that is bigger than both combined.
This as Vietnam’s airline market is growing at the third-fastest pace in the Asia-Pacific region.
Construction of Long Thanh’s terminal and runways will start in 2018, and be built in three phases over three decades, to reach a targeted annual capacity of 100 million passengers and five billion tonnes of goods.
Stage one, from 2018 to 2025, will cost R67bn, and is designed to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2bn tonnes of goods a year. The next two phases will run from 2030 to 2035 and from 2040 to 2050.
It will be built on a 50 square kilometre site – compared to Singapore’s Changi airport on 13sq km, and Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport on 32sq km.
