Hyundai Automotive South Africa opened its new assembly line for five- and six-tonne trucks in Benoni last week. The plant is a R110- million investment that will see the assembly and export of medium-duty trucks across Africa. Garth Strachan, deputy director-general responsible for Industrial Policy Development at the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) said the launch of assembly line came at the right time for South Africa. “Foreign direct investment across a range of manufacturing sectors is significantly up,” he commented. Strachan said the department was confident that Hyundai would provide a good base from which to begin manufacturing in Southern Africa.
