Vehicle exports record a 33.1% dive in July

Following the recent economic disruptions caused by civil unrest in Kwazulu-Natal and certain areas across Gauteng, the cyberattack on Transnet, and the adjusted Alert Level 4 lockdown restrictions, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa) has reported a huge decline in export vehicle sales.

According to a Naamsa report, export sales declined by 33.1% to 16 931 units in July compared to the 25 312 exported in July last year.

“Sales for the medium and heavy truck segments reflected a weak performance at 587 units and 1 521 units respectively, which showed a decline of 113 units, or 16.1% in the case of medium commercial vehicles, and in the case of heavy trucks and buses, a decline of 163 vehicles, or a fall of 9.7%, compared to the corresponding month last year,” the report read.

Mikel Mabasa, Naamsa CEO, said that encouragingly, for the year-to-date, vehicle exports were still 47.3% ahead of the same period last year.
