A trade representative is once again threatening retaliatory action against South African exports into the United States as frustration reportedly mounts over South Africa’s “unjustified and discriminatory” measures against American agri-imports.
According to news reports, the US is now considering the re-imposition of tariffs on a range of South African exports including vehicles, ferromanganese, citrus and wine unless SA fast-tracks the process of opening market access to US chicken, beef and pork.
"Without swift action, SA risks losing important tariff benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa). A resolution on unfair barriers to US exports is urgently needed, particularly given the clear congressional mandate in the recent Agoa renewal legislation," deputy assistant US trade representative Trevor Kincaid said in a statement ahead of a meeting today (Monday) with South Africa’s special envoy on Agoa issues, ambassador Faizel Ismail.
