REAL-TIME tracking information for containers railed throughout South and Southern Africa will soon be a reality when Spoornet CX completes the roll-out of its Movement Management system.
This real-time system, designed to facilitate predictable logistics solutions, recently came on stream at City Deep.
While the implementation hiccups caused severe headaches for CX and its customers (see page 10), most of the creases have now been ironed out.
Smaller stations with little export activity will not be involved initially. However, overborder terminals in the likes of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland are all on the cards.
Over the next six months, we'll make sure that the system is 100% stabilised at City Deep, CX's Bux Coetzee told FTW.
It will ultimately offer enormous logistical advantages. We will be able to adapt every transaction to the client's needs - from the harbour to the delivery. The final objective is for Spoornet to be able to commit to a departure time and guarantee delivery. The concept of Spoornet Predictable Service is based on the successful Swedish model. CX assistant general manager (CX terminals) Harry Mashele was in Sweden at the time of writing to inspect their system at first hand.
