The Ugandan government-owned Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) plans to manufacture 7 000 hybrid cars a year by 2018.
This petrol and electric car called the Kiira Smack is to be a five-seat vehicle with a top speed of 180 kilometres an hour and a 50km range using its lithium-ion battery alone. It will sell for the equivalent of R250 000.
Commentators’ polite description of the project was that it was “very high risk”.
