Truck/taxi crash sees 14 dead and taxi driver charged with murder

There was a total of 14 dead after a truck overturned and landed on a taxi on Greytown Road near Pietermaritzburg on Friday, ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks told that day’s edition of Fin 24. Three other people were seriously injured, with the entire road closed to traffic. People were still stuck underneath the truck on Friday morning as paramedics struggled to free them. "A crane had to be called-in to try and lift the truck off the taxi," Banks added. Later news revealed that charges of murder and attempted murder were laid against the driver of the taxi which was involved in the crash, said KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu. "Preliminary reports have revealed that the driver of the minibus was trying to overtake a long stream of traffic when he side-swiped a truck," she added. The driver was expected to appear in court today (Monday).
