Truck drivers are threatening to take the law into their own hands after a bread truck was petrol-bombed at a traffic light near Somerset West over the long weekend – the third incident in a week, according to a post on the SA Long Distance Truckers’ Facebook page. “Where are the cops to protect our truckers?” was the question many raised on the post, with some saying it was time to take up arms and defend themselves. “The country is in a state of war,” said one trucker, while another suggested transport operators arm the drivers or have trained security guards on board. The South African Police Services (Saps) said in a statement they had launched an investigation into the latest incident but frustrated truck drivers say they have not grasped the fact that truckers are deliberately being targeted “I would just like to know why they aren’t doing anything to patrol that area as it has now become a danger spot for truckers,” another trucker pointed out.
