Investment by logistics companies which have been positioned for years in northern Mozambique in anticipation of a gasfuelled boom is finally paying off. On Monday, August 5, Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi laid the foundation stone for the Anadarko liquefied natural gas (LNG) factory being built in the Palma district of the Cabo Delgado province. United States oil company Anadarko gave the go-ahead in June this year for the construction of the US$20- billion gas liquefaction and export terminal, which will be the largest single LNG project in Africa. The project has created big opportunities for logistics companies to handle project cargo, as well as supplies for people and machines in an area which is largely undeveloped. The Anadarko plant will have the capacity to produce about 12 million tons of natural gas per year. According to the Mozambican government, the project will make available about 400 million cubic feet (1.5 million tons) of natural gas per day to the domestic market.
