Zimbabwe unexpectedly raised toll gate fees with immediate effect last Friday, reportedly causing chaos on the major highways as confusion reigned and drivers refused to pay the steep 500% increase. Despite earlier denials around rumours of a massive toll fee increase by the state-owned Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara), the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development published the “immediate effect” increase in the Government Gazette on Friday. According to the gazetted notice, heavy vehicles now pay US$25 (a massive jump from the previous US$5) and haulage trucks U$50 (up from US$10). Zimbabwean daily, Bulawayo24, reported that many drivers had refused to pay the steep toll fees, causing major traffic jams.
