Truck driver charged after horror crash on N1

A 56-year-old truck driver has been charged with culpable homicide following a horror accident that claimed the lives of ten people on the N1 highway near Bloemfontein over the weekend, according to media reports. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RMTC) is investigating the incident.

On Sunday morning ten people were killed when their bakkie carrying 14 passengers collided with a truck on the N1 near Bloemfontein. A five-month-old baby, three children and six adults were killed.

RTMC spokesperson Thato Mosena said that the Corporation had conducted a preliminary investigation into the accident and found that the truck may have veered into oncoming traffic before it collided with the bakkie. “It is alleged that the truck collided head-on with the bakkie,” said Mosena, adding that this was only the preliminary report and that a full investigation into the accident was still under way.

According to eNCA news, the truck was carrying butane gas and the gas company, Pure Gas, has reportedly started its own investigation. SABC News reported that the truck blamed road works along the N1 for the accident.
