Transporters of counterfeit goods will have trucks impounded

THE CHAIRPERSON of the Zambia Freight Forwarders’ Association (ZFFA), Nicholas Chizyuka, cautions his industry and all transporters about the pitfalls of moving counterfeit goods into Zambia. Counterfeit goods on the streets and in some stores throughout Zambia are becoming a major problem for the government which is obligated to achieve international standards of policing to check the increase in this trade. “There have already been cases where suspected counterfeit goods at the border have been impounded and here in Zambia that means the vehicle or container on a trailer stays with it,” says Chizyuka, who also heads up Circle Transtra International. “You can imagine what that means for other legitimate importers whose products might have been consolidated in that container,” he said. Vehicles impounded with suspect cargo are escorted to Lusaka from the border where the potentially long legal process begins.
