As part of a new long-term partnership between Ghana and the Department of Public Enterprises,Transnet will supply rail equipment to the Ghanaian state railway enterprise, Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL), over the course of the year.
Transnet spokesperson Molatwane Likhete told FTW Online that the South African transport state entity would be supplying its counterpart in the West African country with 110 wagons, eight locomotives, 24 passenger coaches, two kitchens and two power cars. It will also provide training and technical support.
“This will signify a new dawn of hope for the country’s ailing railway company," said minister of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, Joe Ghartey. “The South Africans have shown an unflinching interest in the development of the rail network of the country, and are eager to roll out action plans quickly.”
The partnership between the two countries would extend to the maintenance of Ghana’s railway lines as well, he added, although Transnet has not yet confirmed this.
