Transnet has confirmed that a team at its container terminal at the Port of Cape Town has set a new reefer record after loading 1665 cold-chain boxes onto the Maersk vessel, Santa Clara, last weekend.
The previous record was 1200.
In a statement from Transnet announcing the achievement, acting terminal manager Oscar Borchards said: “The new record was encouraging for the team considering recent adverse conditions in Cape Town.
“Unfavourable weather conditions, including strong winds, could have impacted us negatively. However, the team and the collaboration with the customer, gave us a winning a combination,” Borchards said.
Annually, the terminal moves more than 180 000 reefers with a noted increase of 615 boxes per day this season compared to 395 last season.
Transnet emphasised that agriculture remained a significant sector for South Africa, spurred by government initiatives to assist both established and emerging farmers.
