TPT to double PE reefer capacity

TRANSNET PORT Terminals (TPT) is adding 400 new reefer plug points to the 410 currently available in the port of Port Elizabeth. TPT spokesperson Sindie Ndwalaza says the R16-million investment is in response to growing reefer traffic through the port. The points are being installed in the container terminal and will be ready in March, at the same time as a new post-Panamax crane is scheduled to be operational, she says. Reefer traffic through Port Elizabeth has grown from a total of 17 080 six and 12 metre containers in 2006 to 20 122 in the 11 months to December 2007. The biggest demand is for 12 metre containers, of which 14 817 were exported in 2007, compared to 782 six metre containers. In 2006, 884 six metre containers were exported and 12 3 60 12 metre boxes.
