South Africa, as one of the key emerging economies, is in a prime position to benefit from the global economic power shift, provided the country’s infrastructure can meet new global demands, says Transnet Port Terminals (TPT). The company is actively looking at ways to increase its footprint into Africa by forging strategic partnerships with other regional ports, TPT CEO, Karl Socikwa, said at the Ports and Harbours Show in Sandton last week . Responding to a question about increased port developments elsewhere on the continent, including East and West Africa, Socikwa said: “We are excited about the progress of other ports on the continent. Everyone will benefit from a fully developed competent transport infrastructure in Africa.” TPT is devising a regional ports plan to improve integration. It has also made its general cargo operating system available to ports in Benin and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A regional transhipment strategy is also on the cards, he said.
