Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is investing R1 billion to acquire new tugboats to boost operational efficiency in South African ports.
The authority’s investment in the marine fleet renewal programme will see the acquisition of seven tugboats aimed at enhancing marine operations.
The tugs will replace marine craft that have reached their operational lifespan at the ports of Durban and East London.
TNPA has awarded two contracts to shipbuilding company Damen Shipyards Cape Town to deliver the seven tugs from April to August 2024.
The Port of Durban has been allocated five tugs, and two will go to East London.
Chief harbour master, Captain Rufus Lekala, said: “This investment demonstrates TNPA’s ongoing commitment to providing reliable marine craft at our South African ports, enabling us to effectively service the marine industry and respond to global shipping demands.”
The procured tugs have the latest hull design and propulsion and a 60-tonne bollard pull, an improvement from the 32 and 40-tonne pull of the existing tugs.
The 60-tonne pollard pull meets international standards and makes the craft highly manoeuvrable while guiding larger and newer vessels safely in and out of the ports.
