Four months since its

launch, the new operations

centre at the Port of Cape

Town is bearing fruit.

According to Transnet

National Ports Authority’s

Unathi Malinzi, who

manages the facility,

efficiency and

productivity are being

measured far more

effectively thanks to the

new centre.

“Through this facility we

have managed to integrate

the port system – both

land and sea side – and

therefore have a more

holistic picture of what is

happening in the port in

real time.”

She said having all the

information in one place

was also valuable in that

customers now had a

single port of call rather

than trying to speak to a

variety of sources.

“Our aim is to ensure

that the performance of

all the port entities is

visible from a single area.

While this particular

facility is still very small

and relatively new,

we are already seeing

improvements in efficiency

as we are able to plan more

effectively; we can monitor

the entire port and

therefore have a complete

view of the port.”

Malinzi said while the

facility was currently only

operational during office

hours the ultimate goal

was to have the

operations centre open 24

hours a day, seven days a

week.
