In three months three ‘biggest’

It’s getting tricky keeping up with the world’s largest containerships, because they keep getting bigger and bigger almost overnight.

In March, the biggest was the then newly launched, 20 150-TEU MOL Triumph. Last month it was the 20 568-TEU Maersk Madrid. But right now it’s the 21 413-TEU OOCL Hong Kong that grabs the laurels.

Probably easier to keep tabs on is where they were built. The ships and their soon-to-be delivered sisters are all the products of Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard on Geoje Island in South Korea.

The last time that OOCL set the world record for the largest containership was back in April 2003 with the OOCL Shenzhen, an 8 063-TEU vessel, also built at the SHI shipyard.
