Thermal imaging to enhance ship safety

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) is to install a Flir C2 thermal imaging system on its fleet of coal carriers.

Coal loaded into a ship’s hold can oxidise, generating heat during transport and cargo operations. This can result in fires. But the system, which relies on infrared rays, helps prevent spontaneous combustion of coal in the cargo hold.

According to the line, the cameras allow the crew to quickly pinpoint and visualise high temperatures and combustion spots, not only in the cargo hold but also in other areas of the vessel. This will allow, for example, remote monitoring of the engine room, and will play a key role in preventing onboard fires and burn injuries.
