#ThankYouTrucker finalist has defied all the odds

Meet Chris Smit, a dedicated supply-chain professional who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident, yet who drives a truck for DRK Logistics in Gauteng, a company that can vouch for his selection as one of five finalists in the #ThankYouTrucker competition run by Iveco SA and the Road Freight Association.

“Since the start of his tenure with us, he has been dependable and extra hard-working,” his employer said.

“He pushes through every border and makes each delivery.

“When he leaves South Africa, he has a truckload of food for the border runners and children along the way.

“Despite his disability, Chris always has a friendly word of encouragement and a smile on his face.

“We, as able-bodied South Africans, can really learn from this man. The quality of his work is excellent and we are extremely blessed to have him on the team!”

Fittingly, Smit’s exemplary work ethic and positive attitude have catapulted him into the finals of a competition that serves to shine a light on truckers who, in this country, often find themselves in the firing line of the kind of terror we’re currently seeing in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

This is the third of the #ThankYouTrucker finalists on whom Freight News has cast the spotlight.

Yesterday and Monday we featured Audrey Chiloane and Ayanda Mvelase, respectively driving for Zosi Group and Crossroads Distribution.

Tomorrow and Friday we’ll feature Nimrod Maseko and Matthew Moonsamy, respectively of Maphanga Logistics and Imperial Contract Logistics.

You can vote for the finalists until July 24.
