Service delivery and

efficiency are top of the

agenda for Transnet

Freight Rail (TFR) in its

drive to move cargo from

road to rail, according to

the acting chief executive,

Ravi Nair.

“A key strategic driver

of the Market Demand

Strategy (MDS) is to

address the road-rail

imbalance in the country

and so our initiatives to

move freight back to rail

remains an imperative for

the organisation.”

Nair said the back-torail

strategy was a journey

that had evolved over time

and that required the

integration of effort with

all suppliers across the

supply chain.

“There are

a number

of facets

to this

strategy,”

he said.

“Investment in rail and

port assets as well as in

consolidation hubs, port

and inland terminals

is necessary – as is

investment in integrated

information and digital

technologies that improve

planning and integration

across the supply chain.”

He said TFR had

also made strides in

cooperation with partners

in the development of

bimodal technologies to

support intermodalism

and growth in rail

tonnage.

According to Nair there

are major opportunities

for developing alliances

and partnering with

the private sector to

spur the growth of

intermodalism in the

country.
