In line with its efforts to

ramp up track and trace

security, Transnet Freight

Rail is investigating the

implementation of ‘smart

clamps’ to enable it to identify

the position and location of

every container in the system.

Currently we’re using

an RFID (radio frequency

identification) chip to track

our wagons," says executive

manager: intermodal business

unit, Wiseman, Madinane.

The minute the container

is offloaded from the wagon

Navis takes over. It’s based

on a scanning system – and

customers have access to

Navis.

“We are now looking at

smart clamps that would

have GPS capability so that

on top of our wayside readers

and our RFID we will be

able to physically identify the

position and location of every

container.”
