Terminal operators will have to shape up

Following the completion of the new licensing process for terminal operators, Transnet National Ports Authority has set up performance agreements that will see terminal operators held responsible for operational effectiveness and productivity, TNPA general manager strategy, Nico Walters, told delegates at last week’s SA Association of Freight Forwarders conference in Johannesburg. Terminal operator performance standards (Tops) are described as informed and expected levels of performance for specific terminals and are addendums to the licence. “To efficiently exercise oversight on port operations, TNPA has appointed a senior operations manager across the port who will oversee and monitor the day-to-day delivery of safe, secure, sustainable and efficient integrated water and landside operations,” said Walters. The Tops will be assessed on a quarterly basis and reviewed on an annual basis, he added. “Port operations centres will be established so that at any time people can look at what’s happening within the port – and with that goes a fully f ledged oversight function to ensure we have utilised our assets properly.” INSERT & CAPTION The terminal operator performance standards will be assessed on a quarterly basis and reviewed on an annual basis. – Nico Walters
