Task team launched to address road freight violence

Yesterday saw the launch of a task team – representing all relevant parties - mandated to address ongoing violence related to the employment of foreign nationals in the trucking industry.

This follows a meeting convened by the Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi, and attended by the deputy minister of transport, Parties to the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (Council), representatives of the Departments of Home Affairs, Police and Transport, All Truck Drivers’ Foundation (ATDF), the SA National Cargo Transport Association (Sancatra) and Positive Freight Solutions.

The task team is expected to meet on a regular basis to find speedy solutions to the current impasse.

“Despite the meeting, trucks are still being attacked in various parts of the country,” the Council said. “We urge law enforcement agencies to act against any acts of lawlessness and to ensure their visibility in violent hotspots.”

All parties who attended the meeting have condemned the violence, making it clear that violence is not a solution to the issue.
