The Tanzanian government, through its Roadmap for Improvement of Business Environment and Investment Climate project, plans to reduce the number of roadblocks from 55 to only three between Dar es Salaam and the neighbouring countries of Rwanda and Burundi.
The project, to be undertaken with TradeMark East Africa (TMEA), will see the construction of three weighbridges at Vigwaza, Manyoni and Nyakanazi.
Tanzania News Daily quoted Vedastus Manumbu, principal economist in the Prime Minister’s Office, as saying that the construction of the weighbridges is aimed at reducing the number of roadblocks. He said in 2008 there were 55 roadblocks, and currently there were 15.
Manumbu reportedly also said that plans were under way to set up an electronic cargo tracking system which would work in collaboration with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA)
