Transit Assistance Bureau “Transist” has reported that the South African Police Service (Saps) has warned of a spike in blue-light robberies across Gauteng, with assailants impersonating officers in 48 separate cases.
A white Volkswagen Golf and an Audi were used in several of the incidents, with 27 arrests made involving 25 cases.
The R59 near Kliprivier in southern Gauteng has been identified as a hot spot along with the R550 in Tsakane on the Far East Rand.
It has also been reported that tankers in particular are being targeted and taken cross-border to Mozambique.
Transist said that a protocol and activation of panic buttons had been implemented should truck drivers be stopped by blue-light impostors.
