Sugar imports into Nigeria are due to decrease following the opening of what is known as a Sugarcane Bio-factory at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna state northern Nigeria. The facility will produce disease-free crop seedlings to support Nigeria’s Sugar Master Plan. Sugarcane is seen as a strategic crop with high value addition because ethanol, electricity and animal feed can be produced from it. In the first phase of the project Nigerian sugar cane production is set to increase to 1.6 million tons.
