Major geotechnical issues on the initial proposed route for the Swaziland Rail Link have resulted in the 2018 date for completion of the project being pushed out.
The rail link project – a joint initiative between Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) and Swaziland Railway –which is expected to eliminate non-coal traffic on the export channel from the Mpumalanga coalfields to Richards Bay, would now only be completed by the end of 2019 or early 2020, said Transnet acting CEO Siyabonga Gama.
Addressing media on the side lines of the formal announcement of Transnet’s annual results yesterday (Tuesday), Gama said that there had been “great difficulties” on the initial route which necessitated the creation of an alternate route.
“A business plan has been completed and the new route has been verified so we are back on track with the development, albeit a little later than expected,” he said.
