Surge of vehicle imports at Beitbridge border

There has been an increase of over 40% in imports of pre-owned vehicles at Beitbridge border post in the last eight months, according to official statistics released by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra).

Zimra acting head of communications, Taungana Ndoro, said that the state-owned entity was collecting around US$8.5 million per month from vehicle imports.

He said second-hand vehicle imports were mainly from Japan, UK, Singapore and South Africa – and all vehicles came through South Africa for export to Zimbabwe.

According to Ndoro, Zimra agents are processing an average of 205 imports of second-hand vehicles at Beitbridge daily. These included those cleared under the returning residents rebate facility (Immigrant Rebate).
